Education for All
Posted on Monday, December 22nd, 2008 at 8:23 amEducation should be a right that all citizens must have access to, not just a privilege for those who can pay for it. That’s what has been said over and over and over again throughout the years. Sadly though, that is not the case.
It’s not that not all people have access to education. That’s what the public education system is for. The problem right now is people’s access to quality education.
Yes, in most cases, how a student performs in class largely depends on how good or how diligent he or she is. However, it must not be forgotten that a lot also depends on the teachers, and the facilities of the schools that the students go to.
And that’s just about basic education. What about college? As it is, trying to get a kid through college is so expensive, that some parents leverage their future just so their child can finish school and get a degree.
There could be hope though. One of Barack Obama’s major campaign promises was about college for all. In his plan, deserving students get to go to a university of their choice for free in exchange for community service. It could be a viable plan, as long as the students themselves are willing to support it.
Hopefully, this plan comes into fruition, for the sake of the future of America’s future leaders.
